Machination

Machination is a sound-based installation that deconstructs the modern power ballad. The audio consists of sixty short excerpts of pop songs from a variety of well-known female vocalists. The samples share a common excessive characteristic whereby the vocalization is particularly ornamental and melodramatic. The songs’ emotional and syntactical content have been picked apart and reconfigured to form an endlessly lurching, wailing blend of manufactured passion, at once humourous and alienating.
In previous installations, the sound occurred in a dark, narrow space, illuminated only by several pots of fake flowers on the floor. These kinetic roses lit up and “bloomed” as they slowly swayed to and fro in a mesmerizing yet pathetic display of perpetual beauty.

Cette installation s’interroge sur les conventions de la musique pop, en particulier le power ballad. L’élément principale de la pièce consiste en une trame sonore composée d’environ quatre-vingt courts extraits de chansons populaires de interprétées par des chanteuses renommées. Les extraits ont en commun un élément exagérément émotif et dramatique. Jouée à volume haut dans une pièce sombre, la musique fournit la trame sonore pour une demi-douzaine de pots de fleurs mécaniques en état d’éclosion perpétuelle, placés à distance égale au sol.
