The Air Around Miles Davis’ Hand

2013 Plexiglas, wood

The Air Around Miles Davis’ Hand consists of a small, custom-built Plexiglas display case that I obtained from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts after the closing of their blockbuster exhibition “We Want Miles: Miles Davis vs. Jazz”, in 2010. The case, now simply filled with air, previously displayed three trumpet mouthpieces used by Miles Davis. Pointing to the reverential awe we reserve for iconic figures, the piece attempts to push this reverence to its absurd limit; “the air that touched the thing that touched the hand.”
